Marselan 2008, Val de Salis, Vin de Pays d'Oc
The wine is deep red in colour with a purple hue, the opulent nose exudes notes of black fruit followed by fig and cocoa flavours in the mouth. The finish is very pleasant, well-balanced and with a generous dose of lingering spice for good measure.
This interesting red successfully marries the finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon (minus its leafy varietal aromas) with the robust, spicy nature of Grenache, at the same time keeping a remarkable freshness despite the relatively high alcohol strength.
Domaine Sallies
Between the Corbières and Minervois, 12 miles from Carcassonne and 25 from the Mediterranean, the Val de Salis Estate is on the site of an ancient wetlands amidst the hills and mountains of the Languedoc, cut off from the sea during the uplift that raised the Pyrenees.
Mas du Soleilla 2008 Les Bartelles La Clape (Coteaux du Languedoc)
This velvety red blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache is dark and heady but approachable and easily drinkable now.
Boysenberry and black cherry flood the bouquet, accented by notes of purple flowers and cola. Balanced and lush in the mouth, the black raspberry fruit and peppery spice carry through to the long, evolving finish.
Les Crès 2008, Borie la Vitarèle
The characterful, independent wine comes from the St Chinian appellation. The assemblage with the classic Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre impresses with its intense aroma. On the palate, powerful but not rich or heavy.
Domaine Les Yeuses Vermentino 2010, IGP d'Oc
Vermentino is more usually associated with Sardinia but this example from the Languedoc is as good as any I've tried recently. Fresh, zesty, mineral, well balanced.
Félines Jourdan Picpoul de Pinet, 2010 (Languedoc, France):
Bright and minerally with hints of lime and pith, it makes a perfect pairing with raw seafood.
Claude Jourdan (Domaine Félines Jourdan - Coteaux du Languedoc) is a third-generation winemaker, having taken over from her father 15 years ago.
Minervois, lEnclos de Borie, Cuvée Gourmande, Lorgeril BP4 11610 Pennautier - France
A nicely fashioned, polished Languedoc, with soft, ripe, gently spicy dark fruits and a smooth finish. One for a slightly up-market barbecue or to drink with roasted red meats.
Crémant de Limoux - Les Vignobles Foncalieu
In the foothills of the Pyrenees and the confluence of Mediterranean and oceanic climates, Limoux excels in the production of sparkling wines like Crémant. These wines produced from organic grapes are aromatic and delicate with great freshness in the mouth and extraordinary balance.
La Croisade Réserve Grenache - LGI Wines
This wine comes from a selection of old vines of Grenache Noir surrounding the Mediterranean village of Cruzy (Arrondissement of Béziers). The vineyards benefit from the cooling breeze from the Mediterranian Sea. It shows intense and complex aromas of jammy strawberry with spicy hints of blackcurrant on the nose. While on the palate it is smooth and velvety with a long and fruity aftertaste of cherry. This juicy wine is great on its own but wold also work well with forest mushroom paté or pork chops.
Wine Region Languedoc-Roussillon
Languedoc-Roussillon is best known for its wine. In fact, it is the world’s largest and oldest wine-growing region. Vineyards have simply melded into the Languedoc-Roussillon way of life. Just about every village owns a cooperative wine cellar, which houses wine extracted from the region’s sun-drenched grapes.
Today, over 30 A.O.C. labels come out of Languedoc-Roussillon, offering a rich array of white, red, rose, muscatel and sparking wines with rich bouquets and complex flavours.
