The Royal Thai Army dumped 25 decommissioned military tanks into the sea off the coast in the southern province of Narathiwat (Hotels Narathiwat) to form the foundation of an artificial coral reef.

Army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the army cooperated with several agencies in an attempt to form the country’s largest artificial coral reef in accordance with Her Majesty the Queen’s command in her concern for the livelihood of local residents in the southern border provinces.

Dumping the now disused tanks is part of a royally-initiated campaign to restore natural marine resources in order to raise the incomes and quality of life for local fishermen in Pattani and Narathiwat.

The project is aimed to create an underwater structure to be a shelter and breeding ground for marine life by recycling unused materials.

The Army's move is also to celebrate the Queen's 78th birthday on Thursday August 12th.
