More than 100 bicycles now helping tourists see the sights on Bangkok's Rattanakosin Island - on two wheels, for a pleasant alternative transport mode of seeing the city, according to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Deputy Governor Taya Teepsuwan.

Ms Taya said the BMA's project to encourage tourists to use bikes to travel around Rattanakosin Island was aimed to impress visitors who could view the historical sites and cultural venues appealing to tourists more easily in a limited time.

She said that the service is offered to tourists at no cost and that it could be seen as a way to help fight global warming.

Ms Taya said the bikes would be available during 10am-6pm weekdays and 10am-8pm on weekends.

The BMA has prepared five bike service locations, including at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, City Hall and Santichaiprakan and Saranrom parks.

Ms Taya said the BMA plans to expand the service to cover the Thonburi side of Bangkok later this year.

Meanwhile, Deputy Bangkok Governor Theerachon Manomaipiboon said that on February 1, BMA would begin renovating Sanam Luang.

Moving pigeons from the area would be the first task, he said, adding that the Thai Racing Pigeon Federation would be responsible to move some 10,000 pigeons from Bangkok to Ratchaburi's Army Signal Department.

The mission was expected to take 2-3 months.

The public would then not be allowed to park cars in the area before the BMA would hand over the area to the Royal Thai Army who was assigned to renovate Sanam Luang.

The renovation is expected to be completed by November 30. (TNA)
