Experience the rich history of this ancient, former monastery, thought to be founded by King Alfonso I. It forms part of a National Monument surrounded by the Picos de Europa mountains.

According to local traditions, the monastery was founded by the legendary Catholic King in the eighth century. It was named as a National Monument in 1907, when it was extended using the same materials and style as the original building. Nowadays, the Parador de Cangas de Onís allows you to soak up this tranquil and historic atmosphere whilst staying in luxury.

Set on the green banks of the River Sella, the Parador's beautiful surroundings are perfect for nature lovers looking for a peaceful getaway. Use the hotel as a base to visit the stunning mountain scenery of the Picos de Europa National Park.

After a day in the fresh air, return to the Parador to try some traditional Asturian cuisine in its spacious, traditional-style dining hall.

The monastery was run by the Order of San Benito until 1835. During the refurbishment process, archaeological excavations were carried out - the historically significant findings are on display within the hotel.

The Parador's restaurant specialises in typical dishes from the surrounding region of Asturias, including stew and exquisite cheeses. These dishes can be accompanied by the area's famous poured cider.

In the local area you can visit a bridge dating from Roman times, the historic Santa Cruz chapel and the magnificent Picos de Europa National Park. You can also visit the local market selling authentic local products on Sunday mornings. Several caves in the area display prehistoric paintings of international importance. Visits to the lakes of Covadonga, Enol and La Ercina are also recommended.
