Avalon Airport has intentions of turning itself into a 7,300m² international airport, the second to serve Melbourne, and is in the process of reapplying to the federal government.
The development, to be undertaken by airport operator Linfox, is expected to pass muster this time round, with more attention paid to the issues of immigration and customs.
Avalon Airport services are currently dominated by Jetstar, but reportedly, there are five international carriers eyeing the regional airport if the federal government gives it the stamp of approval.
To be located to the east of the existing domestic terminal, the new development is planned so as to not impact on current airport operations during construction.
Since welcoming the first Jetstar passengers in 2004, Avalon Airport has seen three million travellers pass through its terminals. Linfox estimates that when established the international airport will serve that many passengers in a year.
