Japan has picked up the Wanderlust 'top country' award for 2009 after years of competition for the accolade between Namibia and New Zealand, which were ranked second and third respectively this year.
Readers voted for Japan on the strength of its diversity, from the high-tech appeal of Tokyo to the stunning scenery of Mount Fuji, as well as its wildlife and cuisine.
The country also saw success in the 'top city' category, with Kyoto ranked second behind Antigua in Guatemala, ahead of Boston, Krakow and Havana.
Other winners in the Wanderlust Travel Awards for 2009 included Singapore Changi (top worldwide airport), Singapore Airlines (top major airline) and London City Airport (top UK airport).
A new category was introduced this year to decide the world's top rail journey, which was won by the West Highland Line linking Glasgow to Mallaig in Scotland.
